Middleton students organize successful drives, collecting several tons of food

Middleton Students Spearhead Successful Food Drives, Tackling Community Needs

In the heart of Middleton, Wisconsin, a group of high school students are leading the charge to address growing food insecurity in their community. Driven by a desire to make a tangible difference, these young leaders have organized a series of impactful food drives, breaking records and inspiring action.

Empowering Youth to Tackle Local Challenges

Addressing the Changing Landscape of Food Availability

Middleton, a community once known for its abundance of resources, is now facing a new reality. Senior Noah Duckett, co-founder of Middleton Meals Matter, explains, "For the first time in 30 years, Middleton is running out of supplies, and they're putting limits on things they haven't had to before." This shift has caught many residents, including Duckett's fellow student, Junior Beatrice Norman, by surprise. "It was shocking to hear," Norman said, "and you did feel like you had to do something about it because it's your neighbors, it's your friends, it's your community, so you need to do something about it."

Mobilizing the Community through Student-Led Initiatives

Determined to make a difference, Duckett and his friends have organized a series of student-led food drives, with the third and fourth drives taking place on a recent Saturday. As shoppers entered two local Metro Market stores, the students handed them lists of needed items, encouraging them to contribute. Those who decided to participate could drop off the non-perishable goods in designated bins on their way out. "Wyatt and I, my friend, we kind of wanted to do something big, on a global scale," Duckett shared, "And we were thinking more like clothing, food, but we weren't sure. So, we met with Mr. Brar, the former mayor of Middleton, and also Mr. Morris out of Kiwanis, and they kind of focused us on Middleton, and how important it is to focus on where we're at right now."

Exceeding Expectations and Breaking Records

The students' efforts have been nothing short of remarkable. In their first two food drives held in July, they collected over 4,000 pounds of food and more than ,000, breaking the WayForward's single food drive record. This impressive feat has not only raised awareness but has also inspired action within the community. The students have partnered with WayForward Resources, formerly Middleton Outreach Ministry, to launch a nonprofit organization called Middleton Meals Matter, further solidifying their commitment to addressing the growing need.

Empowering the Next Generation of Community Leaders

The Middleton High School students' initiative and dedication to tackling food insecurity in their community serve as a shining example of the power of youth-led action. By leveraging their passion, creativity, and community connections, these young leaders are not only making a tangible difference but also inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. Their story serves as a testament to the transformative impact that can be achieved when young people are empowered to address the challenges facing their communities.
